Even children can face some degree of the condition. Fortunately, here at Mt Airy ENT & ALLERGY, our board-certified ENT, Dr. Barry Ellis, and audiologist, Dr. Brian Moffitt, can help treat patients of all ages. Read on to learn more about this condition, and call our Mount Airy office if you are in need of treatment.

What are the different types of hearing loss?

There are three main types of hearing loss: sensorineural, conductive and mixed. Most of us will deal with some degree of hearing loss as we get older. In fact, this is fairly common by the time someone turns 65 years old.

What can cause hearing loss?

There are several things that can cause hearing loss. Common causes include,

  • Exposure to excessively loud noises
  • Genetics
  • Birth defects
  • Ear and head infection
  • Aging
  • Reaction to certain drugs
  • Cancer treatment

How can I recognize a hearing problem in a loved one or myself?

Not all hearing loss is profound enough to be easily spotted. Of course, there are important warning signs that point towards the necessity of proper treatment. You may be dealing with some degree of hearing loss if,

  • You often ask people to repeat themselves
  • You have to turn the volume up on the TV or phone in order to hear it
  • You have trouble hearing when in loud environments (e.g. restaurants)
  • You have trouble following a conversation when multiple people are talking
  • You have to face the person speaking in order to understand what they are saying
  • You often hear a buzzing or ringing in the ears
  • It sounds like people around you are often mumbling

If you find yourself dealing with any of these issues, it’s important that you schedule a hearing screening at our Mount Airy office.

How is hearing loss treated?

The type of treatment you receive will depend on the cause of your hearing loss. If impacted earwax is the cause of muffled or decreased hearing, an ENT doctor can easily remove the earwax to restore your hearing. Any inflammation or infections that are affecting your hearing will also be treated with the appropriate medication.

In other cases, many forms of hearing loss can be treated with a hearing aid, which is designed to amplify certain sounds to improve your hearing. While it will not cure your hearing loss or restore hearing, it can make it easier to understand what others are saying.

Those with more severe hearing loss could also benefit from a cochlear implant, which doesn’t amplify sound like a hearing aid, but instead stimulates the auditory nerve to improve hearing.
